Who runs HKIArb?

The members elect a Council every two years which is responsible for running HKIArb. The Council has a number of committees covering such areas as membership, finance, institutional development, education and training programmes.

The affairs of our association are managed by a committee, nine task groups, and the secretariat. The current President is Mr. WONG Chat Chor, Samuel, with two vice presidents: Honourable Kemal Bokhary GBM, JP. and Professor Yun ZHAO.

What is HKIArb and when was it founded?

Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators (HKIArb) is a Hong Kong company limited by guarantee established in September 1996. A group of Hong Kong professional people interested in arbitration, mediation and other kinds of dispute resolution (ADR) got together to form Hong Kong’s own arbitration institute. It has charitable status and is non-profit making.

Since its establishment, HKIArb has grown to include over 1,000 associate members and fellow members. In addition to continuously striving to enhance the quality and professional skills of local arbitrators, HKIArb has also extended its reach overseas, with our members hailing from 16 different jurisdictions. Members include judges, solicitors, barristers, architects, and other professionals engaged in arbitration-related fields (such as costs assessors).

A main objective is to promote ADR in Hong Kong which is a service centre for Asia Pacific Region and gateway to Greater China. HKIArb is involved in the training of arbitrators and mediators and the setting of appropriate standards of conduct for arbitrators and mediators in Hong Kong. It is involved in law reform relevant both to
arbitration and mediation.

HKIArb is working to develop ties with other ADR organizations and governmental bodies involved in arbitration and ADR in Greater China and the Asia Pacific region. HKIArb supports the Belt and Road Initiative and the promotion of Hong Kong as the preferred centre for dispute resolutions. HKIArb is one of ardent supporters of the overseas conferences, workshops and promotional activities related to ADR organized or supported by the Government of Hong Kong and other ADR promotors. HKIArb has extensive experience in the provision of different training courses in ADR and has been actively organizing or participating in training courses for interested parties in Hong Kong and other jurisdictions. HKIArb is trying to reach out to other jurisdictions in promoting and organising training courses outside Hong Kong and to seek to extend our membership for associates and fellows to the professional people sharing the same vision in other jurisdictions.
