At present (2001), there are two grades of membership, associate and fellow.
As an interim measure, any person can become an associate member if he or she has a recognised professional qualification or a first degree in an arbitration-related field, and can show some arbitration / ADR experience, or otherwise satisfies the Council that he or she has a basic knowledge or experience of arbitration. Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Associate status is also recognised.
It is necessary to be qualified for associate membership and have at least ten years of working experience in a responsible position plus and approved tertiary education in arbitration at post-graduate certificate / diploma level or above; or satisfy the Council that he / she has practiced arbitration or other forms of ADR extensively.Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Fellowship status is also recognised.
The Council is working upon establishing courses both for the associate and fellowship grades.
