International Arbitration and Mediation Theory and Practice Conference at Dalian on 02 & 03.11.2002

On 02 & 03.11.2002, Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators ("HKIArb"), jointly with the Dalian Arbitration Commission and the Liaoning Province Arbitration Institute, organised a conference at Dalian. The theme of the conference was international arbitration and mediation theory and practice. Over 100 delegates of 33 arbitration bodies from 17 province, cities and regions attended the conference. The delegation of HKIArb was lead by the President, Mr. Samuel Wong, with invited guests, including Mr. Anthony Houghton, Ms. Sally Harpole and Ms. Shanna Quinn.

The conference took place at the beautiful resort of Banchui Island Hotel, which was reserved for government officials. During the conference, 2 mock arbitrations, one by HKIArb and one by Dalian Arbitration Commission, were staged to contrast the procedural difference of the arbitration. The Hong Kong delegation also took the chance to exchange views on how to integrate the use of mediation in the process of arbitration, which was a special feature of the arbitration process in Mainland China.

The organisation of the conference was also supported by other bodies, such as the Hong Kong Federation of Women Lawyers, the Hong Kong Mediation Centre, Hong Kong Bar Association, the Trade Development Council and the Dalian City Lawyers Association.

A full report of the conference in Chinese is available at HKIArb's webpage at http://www.hkiarb.org.hk/
