AGM and EGM, 12 June 2001

The Institute held its fourth Annual General Meeting (AGM) and an Extra-ordinary General Meeting on the evening of Tuesday 12 June 2001 at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. At the AGM the Report of the Council Members, Report of the Auditors and the annual audited Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2000 were placed before the AGM and the new Council for 2001/2002 was elected.

The Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators (HKIArb) presented a seminar on the enforcement of arbitral awards in Mainland China & Hong Kong at the Shangri-La Hotel, Shenzhen on 24 February 2001. The focus of the seminar was on the practical experience on enforcing arbitral awards. The seminar drew some 100 attendees from Mainland China and Hong Kong, including representatives from major arbitral institutions in Mainland China, including Beijing Arbitration Commission, Shanghai Arbitration Commission, Guangzhou Arbitration Commission, Shenzhen Arbitration Commission and China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, Shanghai Commission.

Following a welcoming address by John Luk, President of Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators, was the keynote speech of Stephen Wong with special reference given to the impacts and insights of China's accession to WTO. Other speakers at the Seminar included Wang Hang Song, Xia Fang, Yuan Cheng Di, Chen Zhong Qien and Teresa Cheng S.C.. During the panel discussions, real-life issues and problems in enforcing arbitral awards were addressed and views as to the future development of arbitration in Mainland China and Hong Kong were also exchanged.
