Anthony Tong joined Robin Bridge & John Liu fresh from the University of Hong Kong in 1988 who has been with the firm ever since.
Anthony has a substantial litigation practice in different areas of intellectual property in both Hong Kong and China. Anthony also has substantial international litigation experience and since 2015 he has been the lead counsel for a Hong Kong listed company in a pan-European litigation involving more than 50 proceedings in 15 European countries. Anthony has also overseen and supervised quite a number of trade mark and patent litigations in the US, Europe and Australia. In addition, Anthony also manages quite a number of local clients’ worldwide trade mark portfolios as well as oversees a lot of international clients’ trade mark portfolios in Greater China.
Anthony has also assisted numerous overseas enterprises to set up businesses in China and Hong Kong and to enter into joint venture agreements with PRC partners.
Anthony has been ranked by the 2017 World Trademark Review 1000 in the most prestigious Gold Tier of the “Individuals: prosecution and strategy” category and Silver Tier of the “Individuals: enforcement and litigation” category. In the same publication, Anthony is being described as “an outstanding player in Greater China trademark matters” and “very client focused and business savvy”. For the fourth year in a row (2014-2017), Anthony has also been named as one of the IP Stars and Trade Mark Stars by the Managing Intellectual Property magazine for Hong Kong.
Anthony has been appointed by the Chief Executive of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to be the Deputy Chairman of the Copyright Tribunal since 1st December 2011. The Copyright Tribunal adjudicates on disputes concerning the terms and conditions of copyright licensing schemes devised by licensing bodies. The Chairman and the Deputy Chairman of the tribunal must be qualified for appointment as District Court Judges.
Anthony is one of the trainers for the IP Manager Program organised by the Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department (“HKIPD”). He has also been appointed as a consultant of the HKIPD to provide free legal advice to the general public on IP related issues. Likewise, Anthony has also been invited by the Hong Kong Science Park to provide free individual consultation for entrepreneurs and participants of the Science Park’s startup incubation program.
Anthony is also the Honorary Legal Adviser of the Design Council of Hong Kong, under the auspices of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, a non-profit-making statutory body created to represent and serve the interests of Hong Kong’s manufacturing industries and to foster their improvement and development, on issues relating to intellectual property.
Anthony is a member of the Project Team for the 2018 International Trademark Association (“INTA”) Annual Meeting in Seattle. He is also a member of the Trademarks Committee of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (“APAA”) as well as a member of the committee of the Intellectual Property Rights Protection Alliance, which establishment was initiated by, inter alia, the Customs and Excise Department of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Anthony has spoken extensively on IP issues on various occasions including at the annual meeting of INTA and APAA, and at seminars organised by HKIPD and other Government departments as well as various statutory bodies representing different business and industry sectors, e.g. the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong, the Federation of Hong Kong Industries etc.
Anthony is also a member of the Appeal Panel (Housing) under the Transport and Housing Bureau of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Anthony has also been appointed by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as a member of the Certifying Body of Hong Kong-Canada Film and Television Co-production, which is established under a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Canadian Government on Film and Television Co-production.
Anthony is an associate member of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators who advises clients on all aspects of alternative dispute resolution.
Anthony is a Notary Public and a PRC Appointed Attesting Officer the latter position allowing him to attest all facts and documents arising out of Hong Kong for use in Courts and Government departments across China.
